We’re really spoiled for choice in this country, aren’t we? Not only can we access our spectacular coastline for next to nothing but we can do it in caravanning comfort. And if you enjoy a challenge, you’ll find a few 4WD-friendly beach driving hotspots to take your caravan on tow. Just be sure to watch the tides, take a second rig, good comms and some recovery gear and lower the tyres all round!
Here are some of our favourite destinations.
BEACH DRIVING ROBE, SA
Less than an hour from Adelaide’s CBD you’ll find beach 4WDing on the white sands of Robe at low tide. Here, newbies will enjoy the sandy tracks through the dunes with plenty of challenges closer to the shore. It’s a favourite among the 4WD fraternity with plenty more tracks nearby in the popular Little Dip Conservation Park.

4WD OCEAN BEACH AT MACQUARIE HEADS, TAS
What better way to experience Tasmania’s dramatic northern coast than to engage 4WD and punt sands? You’ll hit the shores of Ocean Beach just six kilometres from Strahan with access uninterrupted fishing to round out a day of beach driving. Just take care to avoid the quick sand near the mouth of Henty River. (pic: Jason Charles Hill)

DUNE TRACKS WITHIN CAPE LE GRAND, WA
If you’re looking for a unique way to experience the wilds of Cape Le Grand why not bypass Coolgardie-Esperance Highway and share the sandy route
with a roo or two, direct from one of Esperance’s spectacular beaches? Be sure to keep to the limit at 40km an hour and stick to the 20km of established tracks through the dunes.
