Jaw-dropping moments at hidden museums

Our hidden museums uncovered on tour with the What’s Up Downunder crew are full of great finds, with one even offering free camping!

BUBLACOWIE MILITARY MUSEUM, YORKE PENINSULA, SA

Many of us have heard of the Rats of Tobruk. At the privately-owned Bublacowie Military Museum, the reality hits home breaking through the legend. On display, you’ll find a cricket played by some of our diggers fighting alongside allied forces in Libya.

It’s one of the many exhibits sensitivity prepared by veteran Chris Soar.

CAMPING UP AT 4CS MOTOR MUSEUM, PROM COUNTRY, VIC

A fire-engine 1908 horseless carriage is one of the gorgeous finds at the 4CS Motor Museum. Set on five-acres, the museum welcomes caravanners overnighting.

WARATAH COURTHOUSE MUSEUM, WARATAH, TAS

In many towns throughout Australia, courthouses stand in a sombre, quiet dignity sharing few clues into their history. But Waratah Court House–a police station court house–sheds light onto how communities dealt with justice.

The museum charts the region’s mining history which helped support 1,700 locals resided here in the 1900s.
