Cast out a line, coffee in hand, or launch a kayak from the shores of this beautiful caravan park Far North Coast of NSW. Here, you’re close to Tweed Heads and the Gold Coast. But at BIG4 Tweed Billabong Holiday Park it’s not all about the destination, with the park’s owners smartening up the campsites and providing a water park for the kids, as editor for What’s Up Downunder Allison Huth explains.
We have stayed at this park a few times over the years, and each time there is something new. This time it was the big doormats! Let me explain.
We all know just how hard it is to keep the grass in perfect condition, it gets walked on, parked on, dries out because of water restrictions. You name it and something is always making it hard to keep the grass green. And, what is the thing that makes a caravanner smile? A nice green grass site.
Over the past couple of months, the good people at BIG4 Tweed Billabong Holiday Park have been putting Astro Turf on sites so that their guests have a good green surface to park on, and use for their annex/awning floor. The amazing thing about this is that walking on it from the edge to the van acts like a huge doormat and really does cut back on the ‘stuff’ that you normally trek into the van! Bring on the smiles.
But that’s not all they have done at Tweed Billabong. The workmen were putting the finishing touches to more caravan sites. These ones are full Astro Turf, and look just beautiful. The KMac power heads were going in while we were there at the beginning of September and the new sites were already booked out for September school holidays.
It is great to see new sites going in to meet the ever increasing demand for powered sites.
While we were there three camping families with kids set up around us. They were very concerned that the noise of the kids might annoy us, but they really didn’t need to worry. There is so much at this park for kids to do, that they really are tired out by the time bedtime comes around.
The Water Park has just had some maintenance and was only opened again the day we left. I headed off there to catch a couple of photos of the park with water flowing, thinking it would be fairly quiet that early in the morning, but no.
The Water Park was busy with lots of kids having the time of their lives and a couple of dads doing ‘bravery duty’ with some of the little kids. Bravery duty means going down water slides with a little one held closely until they feel brave enough to try it on their own. It can take a while sometimes!
The Jumping Jellyfish has a little kids playroom attached to it so that small ones can play safely without being overrun by the bigger kids. It’s a great idea.
The swimming pool area is huge, and always very popular. Plenty of swimming pools, places to laze, and shade to do it all in. This pool has been around for quite a while, but looks as fresh as the day it was put in.
The kids around our caravan had an early morning play at the Water Park and then it was time to get their kayaks out and go with a parent for a paddle on the billabong. This is a tidal billabong, and you can catch a fish or two in it. You can also play on the water play equipment in the middle of the billabong, and it was great to see the campers ferrying the kids to the equipment in the kayaks, so they could play in the middle of the billabong and jump in and out for as long as they could.
There are go karts, SUPs, kayaks and fishing rods for hire if you don’t have your own.
Last time we were at Tweed Billabong was for the opening of the Australian Green Cauldron Kitchen and Lounge. That was back in 2014, and it looks as if it was only opened yesterday. There is a huge, well equipped, camp kitchen. A comfortable lounge and the verandah overlooks the billabong with two banks of two BBQs. It is very impressive and very well used.
Just to add to the facilities, there is a ‘Coffee with Character’ kiosk that opens up every morning for a couple of hours. And yes, their coffee is excellent! There is also a fish n chips ‘shop’ that serves food every Friday. Amazing additions to the park facilities.
If you don’t have your own accommodation, there is a wonderful range of cabins at the park with six styles to choose from. They sleep anywhere between four and eight, depending on which one you choose. They are all really well laid out and equipped.
As you can tell, we really love being at Tweed Billabong. It’s a beautiful park, with so much to do. If you find time to go out and about, well there is the whole Gold Coast and Tweed Coast right on your doorstep. What more could you want?
