Cape Paterson Caravan Park

Dip into an ocean swimming pool or splash among the shallows, a short walk from your campsite at Cape Paterson Caravan Park. You’re set within a seaside village near Wonthaggi, 132 kilometres south-east of Melbourne via the South Gippsland and Bass Highways, in the Bass Coast touring region.

Set against Cape Paterson Foreshore Reserve, this coastal park enjoys absolute beach frontage affording ocean views amid natural settings.

You’ll lose all sense of time as the kids flock to the shore to build sand castles or play ball games before hitting the surf with their boogie boards. Then, snorkel the main beach or relax in the popular ocean swimming pool (rock pool).

Fishing is great off the beach with good catches of whiting, salmon and the odd flathead.

CAMPING AT CAPE PATERSON CARAVAN PARK

The Cape Paterson Caravan Park offers 118 power sites including campsites, free barbecues, a laundry with everything you need.

The amenities block is very well kept and there’s a dump point plus a security boom gate for your safety. Pets aren’t permitted here due to the park’s proximity to national parkland, which is worth exploring. Managers are on site 24/7 and we found them very friendly and helpful.

Six standard two-bedroom cabins and two Ocean View cabins provide spectacular views. Here, barbecue your catch upon a private balcony with a glass of wine to take it all in.

We caught Tony Roach part-way through a scenic masterpiece painted from the Ocean View cabin’s balcony. Tony says he stays here regularly for the views, peace and quiet and the friendly staff.

ACTIVE IN CAPE PATERSON

There are various beach access points located around the park, and, the beach is patrolled by the local Surf Life Saving Club who are great friendly folk and available for advice or a chat.

A lovely foreshore track weaves through bushland out to cliff-top lookouts overlooking beautiful coastline. Here, you’ll find the swimming pool blasted from the rock platform by miners in 1910. Scramble rock-pools, snorkel the cold water reefs or launch a boat from the ramp at Cape Paterson.

MARINE WONDERS

Dinosaur once roamed the Bass Region. Keen eyes may spot evidence on the coast but for the rest of us try Bunurong Environment Centre, which hosts a Dinosaur Excursion program in the holiday seasons.

Further afield, drive to Bunurong Marine National Park for awesome ocean views. Read interpretive sign boards for historical insights and sit back, relax and enjoy a quiet lunch.
