Ready to hit the road to escape the chill of the southern winter? Or perhaps you’re looking at somewhere to warm up.
Cardwell Van Park is in the perfect place to give the best ‘winter’ experience possible. It’s about midway between Mackay and Cairns on the Queensland coast, which means winter is so easy to deal with.
YOUR STAY AT CARDWELL VAN PARK
Cardwell Van Park has two main styles of on-site accommodation. The en-suite cabins are designed for a couple or a family of four. They also have some standard cabins, which are perfect for two people, and make use of the main amenities block.
The park has many caravan sites, some of which are drive-through sites suitable for motorhomes. One of the main activities in Cardwell is fishing, so it’s good to know that there is room to park your boat on your site too. While you are thinking about your boat, it’s also good to know that Cardwell Van Park is very close to an all weather boat ramp.
RECEPTION
One of the constant problems when you are travelling is the TV reception, it can be anywhere between stupendous and abysmal. So, Colin has made sure that you can watch TV, if you want to, by supplying a TV connection to each site with five channels available. He makes no guarantee about the quality of the programs!
There is a well presented amenities block which boast large showers, always a good idea. There’s nothing worse than having to wriggle around in a shower because it is just a bit too small.
The camp kitchen has plenty of facilities and is a great place to get to meet other guests. From May to September on Friday afternoons the Camp Kitchen is the venue for the park afternoon tea of fresh scones and cream. All you need to do is bring a cuppa with you.
A QUIET LOCATION
The park has the distinct advantage of being the only park in Cardwell off the main highway, which always ensure a quieter place to stay.
When it is time to have a look around the area, you won’t be disappointed. There is plenty to see and do. Have a look at the Cardwell Forest Drive, it takes anywhere from 1 to 2 hours, or even longer if you take a picnic with you to enjoy at one of the stopping off viewing spots.
ACTIVE IN CARDWELL
Cardwell has the Cardwell State Forrest behind it and Hinchinbrook Island is just 8km off the coast. Hinchinbrook is a National Park in its own right and part of the great Barrier Reef National Park. According to Department of Environment and Science “The island’s cloud-covered mountains support fragile heath vegetation. Rainforest and eucalypt forest descend to a mangrove-lined channel in the west with bays, beaches and rocky headlands along the east coast.” It’s also easy to visit with regular ferry trips.
To the north, enjoy pretty walks within Edmund Kennedy, Girramay National Park. Here, take the Cardwell Forest Drive for a dip into a naturally fed spa pool and swimming holes.
TOWN ATTRACTIONS
Cardwell Van Park is ideally situated in walking distance from shops with an RSL, bowling green and golf course close by. Beachgoers will love splashing on the sandy banks of the glorious Hinchinbrook Channel.
For traditional weavings, ceramics and textiles check out the Girringun Aboriginal Museum in town. Then, discover a piece of pioneer history at the Cardwell Bush Telegraph.
This is a seriously beautiful part of the country, and the weather in winter is T shirts and shorts weather. No other way to describe it. The biggest problem you should have is deciding just how long you can stay!
The Cardwell Van Park has everything going for it during the cold winter months down south, and the warmer summer months too.
