The facilities at BIG4 St Helens Holiday Park are fantastic in themselves but at just quick jump away from Lonely Planet’s favourite beach, you’d be crazy to stay elsewhere.
Close to town and the beach, you really are set for a spoiling at this lovely, well-cared for caravan park set on Tasmania’s picturesque East Coast.
Let’s start with the facilities. Excellently-maintained throughout, this park has recently spent some big dollars improving what was already a pretty great spot.
Caravanners will enjoy fuss-free happy hours on newly refurbished powered sites with concrete slabs. While tent and pop-top travellers seeking a little luxury can freshen up with private ensuite sites. Powered and unpowered sites no matter your level of self-sufficiency.
Keen to share a yarn? Newly-accommodated bunkhouse guests can roast marshmallows over a large communal fire-pit or kitchen. Or, join others at the lovely camp kitchen, and a games room with loads of entertainment–indoors and outdoors for the kids.
Young kids burn off some energy at the jumping pillow and a fabulous floor to ceiling toddler entertainment complex.
If you’re living with a mobility impairments, you’ll be treated to the caravan park’s absolute best with the Valley View Units affording outstanding views in true comfort for up to six. While fur babies are now welcome to join you inside St Helens Holiday Park’s new pet-friendly cabins.
Now let’s consider the location. For a start you’re off the highway so there’s no traffic noise but you’re literally a short drive from some of the world’s most amazing sites–Binalong Bay, Bay of Fires, Mount William National Park, Peron Sand Dunes and Eddystone Lighthouse to name a few.
The east coast of Tasmania is undeniably absolutely stunning and the Bay of Fires is just one of the glorious locations we visited on this trip.
It may surprise you but Bay of Fires was named by explorers who spotted blazing fires along the coast and not because of the red algae on the rocks. Regardless of its origins, the name remains fitting with algae aglow in the sunset light set beautifully against the snow white sand.
The Bay of Fires extends more than 50 kilometres from Binalong Bay to Eddystone Point at its northern-most part. You’ll find miles of beautiful beaches to stretch the legs on a long-distance hike or simply a casual stroll.
Visiting the area of Tasmania, any time of the year is a visual feast. My suggestion? Take your camera as you will be blown away by the scenery.

4WDING THE REGION
Dick Le Fevre knows the east coast of Tasmania better than the back of his hand. He is schooled in the different areas along the coast as well as the history of each region. Join Eddie on a 4WD on the coast and hinterland and inland areas in a safe, considerate way.
Here, Dick will take you up to the lighthouse at Eddystone Point traditional owner’s guidelines.
After leaving the coast experience a complete contrast at the Musselroe Windfarm at Cape Portland. With over 56 wind turbines, Musselroe Windfarm produces approximately 5 percent of Tasmania’s electricity needs.

WINING AND DINING IN THE REGION
Feeling the chill? You’ll warm up quick over a cold-climate drop at Priory Ridge. If you’re lucky, winemaker Julie Llewellyn may even greet you at the cellar door.
Once sheep farmers, Julie’s family has tended the land here since 1890 before venturing into boutique winemaking we see today.
