Hear a talesman’s prose by a flickering glow. That’s Bourke in a nutshell at Kidman’s Camp. Nine hours from Sydney; you’ve truly earned this starlit sky.
You’ll find refuge here among the shaded campsites set amongst colourful gardens. There’s 90 powered sites to set up camp and a large lovely unpowered campground to unfurl your canvas empire.
Or, you can just leave the caravan, camper trailer or tent behind and opt for cabin or chalet. Tree trunk posts steady the verandahs on these beautifully-appointed guest houses, available in various configurations.
The shared spaces at Kidman’s Camp are top notch, comprising two swimming pools, a sheltered barbecue area, a laundry and camp kitchen. But it’s at the communal campfire where you’ll find a sense of belonging at happy hours four nights a week.
As the mercury drops to the beat of a strum, a hearty beef casserole, vegetable hotpot, cuppa and desert await. The kids will love watching the billy tea brew. It’s a genuine Bourke-style welcome, courtesy of life-time locals Tracey and Peter Simmonds, who is a former Australian Champion Bronc Rider.
Kidman’s Camp adjoins the Darling River; in fact, daily during the winter touring season the Jandra paddle-steamer moors on-site near camp. But you can also fish here, too, or bushwalk the facility on well-maintained tracks.
